The need for AC power lightning and surge arresters is on utilization voltage lines (600Vrms and below), single and three phase, feeding electrical and electronic equipment vulnerable to overvoltage and surge current transients. Installations are made in appropriate locations between the secondary of the power transformer and the equipment to be protected. Lightning trouble may occur due to direct hits or by induction from nearby strikes. Surge troubles are associated with man-made "switching" transients in operation of electrical equipment. Lightning may be the only problem, switching surges may be the only problem, or both may be the problem. The lightning and surge arrester is insurance of protection against damage. Unlike the accident insurance policy, the arrester pays off before the lightning/surge accident can cause trouble.
The choice of Light, Medium, Heavy, or Extra Heavy Duty surge arrester is dictated not by size of the facility, since lightning and surges are not selective, but by: The choice of using a surge arrester at all is often made after the first "accident". If not, after the second or third occurrence one is convinced that lightning can strike twice! |
